Far and away the most popular Climate Chronicle post of 2010 — I’ve only been at this since May — was the one I published on July 25 about climatologist James Hansen’s recent book, Storms of My Grandchildren: The Truth About the Coming Climate Catastrophe and Our Last Chance to Save Humanity.

Of footprints and badges

Carbon footprint is such a gentle euphemism, as if the impressions we leave are little more than imprints in the sand; a more accurate metaphor would be “carbon wound.”


Dear Mr. Fallows: It doesn’t follow

Our biggest challenge is not, as James Fallows argues, meeting an ever-growing demand for energy. Our biggest challenge is avoiding catastrophic climate change — caused primarily by the burning of holocaustic coal — that could kill and impoverish far more human beings than Hitler ever did.
